The Great Stair, The Hall of Kings & The Tree of Possibilities

Throughout much of Ae’gura there is a relief carved into the city floor that resembles a long, winding branch. At various points on this branch smaller arms spread out, each with small seeds or leaves at their end.

This design represent the Great Tree of Possibilities, or Terokh Jeruth as it was called by the D’ni, and ties into the D’ni creation myths. The Great Tree is an allegory used by the D’ni to explain the universe the infinite number of possible Ages that can/ could exist. The Great Tree was said to be created by the D’ni god Yahvo, the Maker.

At a visual level, the main trunk of the Tree represents the universe, the branches the possibilities and the seeds (or leaves) the Ages that could come from those possibilities. The idea of possibilities = Ages is not unlike our own understanding of Chaos Theory and the Butterfly Effect. Each of the seeds (or Ages) representing another possible Age if a small change is made in carrying out of the possibilities that are granted by the Universe.

The most prominent representation of the Great Tree appears within Tokotah Courtyard. The design spans across the center of the Courtyard, and visitors to Tokotah link in atop the design as it passes through the large stalagmite at the Courtyard’s center.

Exactly where the design begins is unclear as the DRC have blocked off the far end of the Courtyard. However, the map left by the DRC in Tokotah suggests the design probably extends as far as the Guild Hall which is located at the far South end of Ae’gura island.

The design follows through Tokotah Courtyard to and down the Great Stair which leads to the Waterfront. It should be noted that the Great Stair actually ends at a landing above the level of the Waterfront, a separate set of stair leading from here to the Waterfront itself.

he Great Tree can also be seen in various other locations around Ae’gura. The most prominent would be the floor pattern in the Hall of Kings.

The Hall of Kings is a large, circular room in which notebooks detailing the reign of the 34 Kings of D’ni can be found. Each of these notebooks has been placed upon stylised plinths (actually part of the Hall’s walls) with the corresponding name of each king engraved above. It is worth noting that the notebooks currently found in the Hall are translations made by the DRC. It is to be assumed that the DRC removed the original D’ni books on the kings for translation and they are now (hopefully) housed somewhere safe.

The Great Tree pattern can be found on the Hall’s floor at its center. You’ll notice this is slightly different as rather than being a single branch the pattern has a spiral center point from which several branches extend. It is assumed that the central spiral represents Garternay, the D’ni’s original home Age, with the branches and seeds again representing possibilities and Ages. The branch motif then repeats outside the circular pattern, forming a kind of border.

The pattern can also be seen on the ground surrounding the Ae’gura Common Library. It can be somewhat easy to miss here due to the large scale of the design in this area as well as the fact most Explorers would be concentrating on the Library itself. If you look at the floor directly in front of the Explorer in the photo below you can make out the branch/ leaves portion of the design.

Finally, the Great Tree pattern can be seen in the neighborhoods of the D’ni city, Bevin, Seret and Kirel on the Garden of Light’s lampposts. Here, we a see a single branch winding up the lamppost toward the bright orb at its top.

There may be other instances of the Great Tree pattern throughout the Cavern, but until the DRC or some other body returns to grant Explorers access we may never know.
